With the state of our economy in such flux and the cost of everyday living rising almost day by day, it becomes difficult to concentrate our time and resources on seemingly peripheral matters like nutrition and fitness. Gas has hit record prices and groceries are becoming quite costly due to the recent flooding in the Midwest. Life has become just a little more complicated. How are you supposed to worry about eating healthy when you’re worried about putting food on the table? After all, hotdogs and ramen noodles may not be very nutritious but they are affordable, right?
The answer may be as close as your backyard. The bulk of our nutritional needs come from fruits, vegetables, and grains. Since grain products are going to become an expensive expenditure, you may need to cut back on your spending in other areas. So what is the solution? Are you going to have to choose between produce and grains? The answer is you don’t have to choose. Take control of your finances and nutritional requirements. Grow your own produce.
Backyard gardens are not uncommon. You can grow just about anything. Squash, tomatoes, grapes, potatoes, and even corn can be grown right in your own backyard. Produce can take a big chunk out of your grocery budget. If you grow fruits and vegetables in your own yard, you can put that chunk of your grocery budget towards other necessary items, like grain products. Growing your own fruits and vegetables also puts you in control of which, if any, chemicals and pesticides you expose your produce. For once, organic could be affordable in a time when most things are not. And you would be spending more time outdoors and less time indoors being inactive.
If you are concerned about your ability to grow your own food, you could visit local farms instead. Many small farms offer produce at very affordable prices. Not only would you be saving bucks, but you would be supporting a small business that really needs the support. Some of the farms may also provide helpful advice on how to successfully grow your own produce. You could try your hand at a few items and purchase the rest from the local farms. Small farms often offer extras, too. Extras like homemade honey and fruit spreads are common. Not only would you save some much needed cash, but you could enjoy natural and delicious treats that were actually nutritious too.
Every generation seems to live through a difficult financial time. And many people live through several financial crises. The people that suffered through past crunches learned to cut corners and weather lean times. Perhaps these lean times can help you attain the lean body you’ve always wanted. Obtaining the bulk of your daily food intake from fresh fruits and vegetables will promote good health and a healthy metabolism. Just think of all the calories you will burn tending to your vegetable garden instead of sitting in front of the television. Maybe these lean times could be the beginning of a new, healthier you.
