How can I stay motivated to exercise?

Trying to stay motivated to exercise can be difficult. Daily life tends to interfere with even our best efforts. Work, children, home, and spouses demand time and attention and sometimes you may find that you just do not feel like expending the energy necessary to exercise. But if you truly want to see results and continue to make progress, you have to find the resolve to push past these daily obstacles.

One technique that can be motivating and inspiring is the journal method. Keep track of the days you exercise. You can use a notebook or calendar. Every day that you exercise, log it in your notebook or calendar. Track the number of days in a given week that you exercise. At the end of the week you can look back and see how much time you have dedicated to fitness. It is a good way to mark your progress and some people may find that tracking the days motivates them to push past any interfering factors.

Another option is to schedule your work-outs in the same manner you would schedule any other important appointments. You can select certain days and times of the week or determine a new schedule at the beginning of each week around that week’s schedule. By planning in advance which days you will exercise, you’ll be more likely to adhere to your exercise plan and meet your fitness goals.

It is difficult to persist with an exercise schedule. Sometimes it feels as if more important things are neglected when you try to fit in work-outs. But the daily chores will still be there when you are finished. And your health and well being are just as important as the laundry. Aren’t they?
