The malaria thing reminds me of the leeches that they use to use for bloodletting. About 10 years ago I saw an article saying that they were using leeches for some type of medical treatment again, but I don’t remember the specifics.
Also I think tomatoes were thought to be poisonous years ago because people had died of lead poisoning after eating a tomato from a lead plate. The acid would eat into the lead and they would end up eating it and dying.
Strange things….
