Do products like ‘Airborne’ really help stave off a cold?

You’ve seen these products on the drug store shelves.  They are mixed in amongst the cold remedies.  They are almost like a beacon of hope to those of us buying the cold remedies for infected family members.  I know you have thought it.  Will this product help me avoid this cold?  After all, that is what the packaging promises.

Investigations into the effectiveness of the cold prevention products have been inconclusive.  Legitimate research studies have not been performed.   The manufacturers of the cold prevention products have stated that the products are not intended as a cure for colds.  Instead they are intended to boost the immune system and enable it to fight off the viruses and bacteria that could cause a cold.

So the next time you are in the cold remedy aisle at the store and see the ‘Airborne’ package, go ahead and try it.  The product does contain immune boosting contents.  Who couldn’t afford a boost to the immune system?  But don’t overlook the usual proven precautions to avoid illness.  Wash your hands.  Avoid close proximity, if you are able, to those that are already sick.  And get plenty of vitamins and water in your diet.
