Motivation is the key to success in fitness. Without motivation, you may find that you are making excuses to yourself. You will find reasons to miss workouts. You will tell yourself you didn’t reach your goal due to extenuating circumstances beyond your control. You will start to convince yourself that perhaps exercise is futile because the possibility of actually achieving your goals is remote and unlikely. These self defeating behaviors will cause you to fail.
So how do you avoid falling into these subjugating practices? What can you do to actively avoid failure? First, and most importantly, you must have confidence in your self. You must believe that you are capable of achieving whatever goal you set for your body. Remember that no goal is unattainable. Allowing negative thoughts to attack this belief will set you up for the self fulfilling prophecy. The self fulfilling prophecy is the premise that if you believe something to be true, you will make it true. If you believe you are unable to perform an exercise or achieve a goal, you will make it true. This premise works in reverse, too. If you believe you can make your goals happen, you will.
Your mind is influenced strongly by your beliefs. Believe in your ability and you will be able to achieve your objectives. An excellent method of accomplishing this is to equip yourself with the knowledge to make your self successful. It is difficult to successfully accomplish something if you don’t know how to make it happen. If you want to lose weight, find out what you need to do to accomplish weight loss. Determine your caloric needs, your cardio requirements, and develop a resistance training program. Talk to trainers at the gym. Talk to your doctor. Research the information on the internet. If your goals are to increase muscle mass, you have to develop an aggressive weight training program. You want to deluge your body with the nutrients essential to muscle growth.
No matter what the goal you set for yourself is, you need to believe in your ability to achieve that goal. If you lack self-efficacy, you will convince your body it will fail. Have confidence, research the information, and augment your knowledge and you will find that you are capable of achieving any goal you are willing to work towards. Avoid making excuses to yourself and consistently strive towards your goal. The goal itself will provide the incentive you need.
