Protein is an integral part of your body make-up. It is found in almost every body part. After water, 75% of your body weight is attributed to protein. There are two types of protein; animal and vegetable. It is found in beef, fish, poultry, beans, nuts, and whole grains. Protein is constructed by amino acids. Our bodies do not store amino acids so it is important to replenish these chemicals daily to facilitate the formation of protein.
Currently, limited information exists concerning the health benefits of protein. It has been determined that the average person requires 9grams of protein for every 20 pounds. Protein has been shown to assist with weight loss. It is believed this is due to the foods you eat to consume protein. These foods tend to digest slowly. This results in a feeling of fullness for a longer period of time. And if you are less hungry, you usually eat less. It is also credited with stabilizing blood sugar. Since there is no quick rise and fall of blood sugar levels, your body doesn’t scream for food when it drops. And lastly, your body expends more energy digesting protein.
Protein is necessary. Deficiencies lead to loss of muscle mass, decreased immunity, growth failure, and can cause problems for your heart and in your respiratory system. Protein does require calcium to neutralize the acids it releases into your blood. If you don’t get enough calcium to accomplish this, your body can pull it from your bones. This would result in weakened bones.
