Early this week a warning was issued across the US warning consumers of an outbreak of an unusual strain of salmonella called salmonellosis. The reports informed consumers that tomatoes have been blamed for the outbreak. The Food and Drug administration is recommending that everyone avoid eating raw, red tomatoes unless they are homegrown or were sold still attached to the vine. Cherry and grape tomatoes have also been deemed safe.
Over 150 cases of salmonellosis have been reported across the country. More than a dozen of the reported cases of salmonellosis required hospitalization. The FDA is recommending that you avoid eating raw, red tomatoes from restaurants and fast food places. They further stated that these tomatoes could have been used to prepare salsa and guacamole.
