Another antibiotic resistant bug is on the rise. The germ Clostridium difficile is an intestinal bug that is found in the colon. The germ Clostridium difficile germ is spread through spores found in feces. Persons infected with the germ may suffer with diarrhea. The germ can lead to a condition called colitis. The germ spores are resistant to most household cleaners and the antibacterial soaps, making it difficult to kill them.
Doctors have found that treating the germ, now being called a superbug, with antibiotics is killing other possibly less harmful bacteria and leaving the dangerous Clostridium difficile germ. Without the other bacteria and germs to compete with, Clostridium difficile is able to multiply more easily. Because this superbug is difficult to kill with antibiotics, household cleaners, and antibacterial soaps, the incidents of infection are on the rise. The number of cases of persons infected with this strain of superbug isn’t at epidemic proportions, but the significant increase is cause for some concern.
