What can I do to ready my mind and body to begin an exercise program?

Exercising is easier to talk about doing than it is to actually do.  There are many interfering factors that will prevent you from exercising.   The most disheartening factors on the list have to be inability and ignorance.  Not everyone can be a fitness expert.  If you don’t know how to begin exercising or what exercises you need to do to reach your goals, beginning to exercise can seem daunting and futile.

In order to devise an exercise program that meets your needs, you may need to consult a professional.  Schedule a consultation with a personal trainer.  Consulting with a trainer will not oblige you to become a regular client.  The trainer can just create an exercise program tailored to you and answer any questions you may have.  You could also consult with your doctor.  Your doctor will know what your specific needs are and will be also be able to warn you of your physical limitations.

If you haven’t begun to exercise because it is too physically demanding and strenuous for you, there are things you can do to prime your body for a regular exercise program.  Start by parking a little further out everywhere you go.  This will force you to walk further.  Take one flight of stairs instead of the elevator.  If you need to go up higher than one flight, than get on the elevator after the one flight.  Walk once around your block everyday.  Increase your walking pace, the number of flights, and the number of laps regularly.

Do these things everyday.  Eventually you will find they will be easier to do and soon these actions won’t seem as daunting.  You will be able to prepare your body for a regular exercise program.  You may even see some weight loss from these simple forms of exercise.  Exercise is simply an increase of physical activity and the intensity level at which you perform the activities.  Not everyone is at the same fitness level and there is nothing wrong with that.  Some people may even suffer from physical constraints, such as a medical illness, physical disability, or a weight issue, that make exercise extremely difficult.  Take pride in every positive action you take towards fitness.  You deserve the praise.
