Stroke is listed as the third leading cause of death in the US after heart disease and cancer. Stroke statistics concerning African Americans are even more staggering and frightening. African American people are most often affected by stroke. The statistics on African Americans and stroke risks are cause for great concern. If you are African American, it is important that you are informed of the great risk stroke poses.
Statistics indicate that African Americans are twice more likely to die from a stroke than Caucasians. Half of all African American women die from either stroke or heart disease. Half! An African American male between the ages of 45 and 54 are three times more likely to suffer an ischemic stroke. These statistics speak of a need for immediate action. It is important that you are familiar with the risk factors and implement changes to lower your risk.
The reasons for the increased risk of stroke for African Americans over all other groups are attributed mostly to higher incidence of the risk factors. High blood pressure is one of the risk factors associated with stroke. One third of African Americans is said to have high blood pressure. Obesity and smoking are also risk factors of stroke. The incidence of obesity and smoking is higher among African Americans than other groups. Sickle Cell Anemia can increase the likelihood of stroke as the sickle shaped cells are more likely to block blood vessels.
Due to the grim statistics, it is important that African American people are informed about stroke. You should know the risk factors of stroke and actively work to lower that risk. A healthy diet and daily exercise are vital to lowering your risk. If you smoke, quit now. Most importantly, if you believe that you may be experiencing symptoms that indicate a stroke, get help right away. Do not wait. When it comes to a stroke, time will make the difference between life and death.
