What is your risk of skin cancer?

Do you know how many of the risk factors attributed to increasing your chances of skin cancer apply to you? There are many factors the experts have found that can increase your odds. If one of your family members has ever been diagnosed with it, your odds are increased by 50%. Some doctors say the odds are even higher. So if any member of your family has ever suffered with any form of skin cancer, you may want to get any suspicious spots on your body checked.

People who have freckles, light hair or eyes, or fair skin are also at a higher risk. Doctors have reported that individuals with these physical attributes have less natural protection than those with darker skin, eyes, or hair. And if you have a lot of moles, your risk is increased also. Studies have found that a quarter of melanomas developed from regular moles. So I guess it would make sense that the more you have, the higher your odds.

We have all heard that tanning and sunburns lead to skin cancer. But how many people realize that having a scar, smoking, and even birth control pills are all considered to be risks. Tanning salons and higher altitudes tend to increase your risk also. Seems like common sense that if you are closer to the tanning rays, you are also closer to the cancer rays.

Basically, you should be wary of any activity that results in sun exposure. If you know you will be spending time in the sun, try to use a sunscreen with a high SPF. Your tan may not be as golden as you want, but look at the up side. You won’t look 60 when you turn 30. And there is always self tanning lotion.
